According to the dictionary Gratitude is “the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness”
Beautiful quality to have, there is so much to be thankful for! Yet so many people go through the motions of life in a haze of disappointment. When we are constantly comparing our current situation to where we want to be in the future, where we were in the past or where other people around us are at, we lose touch with how much there is in front of us right now to be grateful for.
For me, gratitude is the fastest and most beautiful way to bring me back to the present moment. To make me realise that whatever worry, stress or anxiousness I am feeling is only caused by my mind trying to take me anywhere but where I am. When I ask myself “what are you grateful for right now?” It anchors me in and allows me to show so much appreciation to how my life is right now, it is the most effective way for all those unwanted feelings to melt away. It also allows me to express appreciation to those feelings because they act as a prompt to make me more present.
Expressing gratitude has been a habit of mine for a while now so when Carlo told me about his Vibe Tribe Gratitude Mastermind, I was very interested in finding out more. We have just completed an intensive 14 days where we express 3 things each that we are grateful for. Although I do note down 3 things I am grateful for each night, Carlo’s challenge was to get really specific and go deep with exactly why we are grateful for what we listed.
"It's not about being positive all the time, terrible things are going to happen, but gratitude teaches you how to appreciate both the good and bad" - Carlo Cirillo
I threw a few questions at Carlo Crillo – lifestyle entrepreneur, founder of Project Infinite and mastermind behind the Gratitude Vibe Tribe, to gain some more insights behind his thoughts on gratitude and how everyone can establish a gratitude practise.
Tell me about the inspiration behind your Gratitude Mastermind?
Late last year a mentor of mine took me under his wing and gave me full immersion guidance for about 3-4 weeks, Practicing & expressing gratitude every single day. In the process he showed me how to get really specific, deep and how you can acknowledge and be grateful for every little thing in life. Whether it was objects, feelings, emotions, senses, personal attributes, people, good or bad situations, basically anything in life. This really opened my eyes to how everything effects and impacts each other but also how much appreciation I had for life and everything in it. I saw how much it has helped me and knew it could help others too and I knew it would be doing him an injustice not passing this valuable tool onto others, so I decided to form the Vibe Tribe Gratitude Mastermind.
What impact has expressing gratitude had on your life?
Expressing Gratitude has given me a strong awareness for all the little things around me, the power to control my emotional state and it has changed the way I see the world. I can find peace at any moment, as far-fetched as that seems there is a blessing and thankfulness to be found in all situations, with this peace I find myself happier and more appreciative. How can you be angry and upset when you are thankful? Someone, somewhere in the world could only dream of being able to go through what you are going through, or have what you have. It's not about being positive all the time, terrible things are going to happen, but gratitude teaches you how to appreciate both the good and bad and see the benefits of both. Mental alchemy. Even in the not so positive moments throughout the day there is so much to be grateful for and it's been able to help me realize that certain times for me that seemed to be “the worst of my life” were in fact huge blessings. "Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn't learn a lot today, at least we learned a little, and if we didn't learn a little, at least we didn't get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn't die; so, let us all be thankful." Buddha
And what impact has that had on the people around you?
I feel by me expressing gratitude and having this appreciation for life, all the things in it I am able to effect the people around me simply by being a better human being. I find I focus more on listening and being present which is something people really appreciate. I am able to help others see the good which in turn can shift their paradigm and give them the ability to look through a new perspective.
How can others bring more gratitude into their life on a practical level?
A few simple ways anyone can practice more gratitude in their life would be to firstly in the morning, just as you are under the covers in bed, say thank you. And just think as to why you are thankful. I do this every morning, Thankful for being able to wake up breathing and live another day. We are gifted 86,400 seconds of life in a day, I think it's only fair to spend a couple of those seconds just to say thank you. Another way can be writing down 3 things you are grateful for each night before bed. It can be literally anything! A person, feeling, emotions, place, object, experience, situations, dreams, attributes etc. Make sure it is very specific, for example instead of just saying: “I am grateful for my family”, narrow it down to the deep specifics like “I am grateful for the strong and loving relationship between me and my mum – and specifically because of the phone call we had today.” Then underneath that write how that specific affects you personally - your feelings, your actions, your emotions. Then how it impacts your community and the people around you by you having those feelings, action and emotions. And then how that specific gratitude impacts the world on a global scale – ie: how others would benefit from having that situation in their life, strong and loving relationships with parents. Once you get the hang of it, you can go wild expressing gratitude for everything & anything!
